First and foremost you should look for credentials, what kind of training and education has this person received that allows them to call themselves a therapist? Anybody can label themselves "therapist", all it takes is a class, sometimes not even that, in some obscure therapy method and being handed a diploma saying you passed.
Luckily there are not too many of those around anymore. Others are more serious and have a genuine interest in the art and try to learn as much as they can by learning established therapy techniques and methods by acknowledged teachers and clinicians, however this only takes you so far and limits you to those specific methods and techniques.
Last but not least there are those that, like Mr Johan and Mr Christoffer, have studied a customized masters program on university level specifically designed to train clinical psychologists. A clinical psychologist has extensive clinical training and a theoretical base that comes from years of studies.
A therapy session is usually 50 minutes although sometimes it has to be longer or shorter in order to suit the present situation.
It is a bit difficult to say what we can do for you before we meet and talk, problems are often more complex than they seem to be initially and require a much more thorough inspection than we can give without seeing you.
If you want to find out whether or not I can help you, please contact us and make an appointment for a consulting session.
Typically you contact us and make an appointment for a consulting session, the purpose of this is for us to thoroughly investigate the issue you want us to help you with as well as your background and present situation and is usually done in one or two sessions.
When this is done we should have a bit of a feel for each other and be able to decide if we should attempt to solve your problem together.
That depends on several different factors but generally you can say the time spent in therapy will range from around 10 sessions, for issues like phobias and such that are more simple in nature, to a couple of years for more complex issues like depression, anxiety and personality disorders and the like.
Unfortunately we don't, if you have an insurance you have to check to see if it covers the cost for your treatment or not. We will however provide you with the necessary paperwork such as receipts and statements to make the contact with your insurance company go as smoothly as possible.
I only take on a limited number of clients, this is so I can be able to give each and every one the attention they need. If we lower our fees we would have to take on more clients and possibly risk not being able to give you the time and energy it takes to give the best possible treatment.
That being said we can sometimes be flexible if there is a good cause for it, if you want to know more just send us an email and we'll try to work something out.
